Reading a dispersion plot

A cloud of dots can answer more than an average can.

· Dale Brandt

An average carry number hides most of what matters. A dispersion plot shows where every shot finished, and the pattern says a good deal.

A wide cloud usually means inconsistency in strike or face angle. A tight cloud that is offset to one side means a systematic cause, such as a lie angle error or a face that is open at impact.

What changes

A tight cloud can often be moved. A wide one needs practice, not equipment. We will tell you which one you have.

Bring the plot to your next lesson. Your instructor will find it useful too.
