What a carry gap tells you

Distance between clubs is more useful than distance alone.

· Ruth Tolliver

Most golfers know how far they hit the seven iron. Fewer know how far it is from the seven to the eight.

When we chart a set, we look for uneven steps. A gap of six yards between one pair and fourteen between the next is common, and it means the set is doing less work than it should.

Fixing it

Sometimes a loft adjustment of a degree closes the gap. Sometimes one club is the wrong shaft. Occasionally we recommend changing nothing and simply choosing a different club on a given hole.

The chart is the first thing we print for an iron session and the last thing most clients put in their bag.
