When golfers ask for a shaft, they usually say stiff or regular. We would rather start with weight.
A shaft that is a few grams too light often feels whippy and can encourage a faster transition than the player intends. A shaft that is too heavy makes the swing feel labored. Between them is a range of a few grams where tempo settles.
How we find it
We test three weights in the same flex and watch dispersion. After that we test flex within the winning weight. Weight comes first because it is the variable that most influences how the club feels in the hand.
The result is often a shaft that surprises the player. It is rarely the one they walked in asking for.
